Journey BLOC Party – “Where Everybody Knows Your Name”

In the 80‘s, it was “Cheers.” In the 90‘s, it was “Friends.” Today, it’s The Big Bang Theory.   These shows remind us that no matter who we are, everyone needs a place to go “where everybody knows your name.” That’s because God has put into the human heart a desire to know and be known, to love and be loved, and to serve and be served.

I believe the best place for that is “the church.”  Sadly, as we heard the other Sunday, people have run instead to places like the neighborhood bar to find community. The best a bar can offer is only a counterfeit community. As the quote said, “It (the bar) is an imitation, dispensing liquor instead of grace, escape rather than reality, but it is a permissive, accepting, and inclusive fellowship. It is unshockable. It is democratic. You can tell people secrets and they usually don’t tell others or even want to.” Bruce Larson and Keith Miller, “The Edge of Adventure”

The church, however, offers something, as we said, “better than the bar.” It offers what Tim Keller calls spiritual friendships, and there is no better place to build those spiritual friendships than in something we call BLOCS. B.L.O.C.S. is an acronym for “Building Loving Opportunities of Community and Service. They are, in essence, our form of small groups where people can do life together, but without the “hangover”!

We will kick off a new round of BLOCS this Sunday night, September 27th, with a “BLOC Party” where everyone who is already in a BLOC, interested in getting in a BLOC or just looking for a “party” is invited to join us at the Ministry Center at 6 p.m. A light dinner will be provided as well as childcare for children, nursery to 5th grade.

Also, please join us this Sunday morning when we look at the rest of the story and discover the surprising thing God does next for David after teaching him to lean on Him. I look forward to seeing you Sunday!
